20 km to the east of Hohhot downtown, not far from the Baita International Airport, rises the Wanbu Huayanjing Tower, literally meaning the Tower for Ten-thousand-volume Avatamsaka Sutra. It is popularly called the “White Tower”by local people, as it is coated with chalk. Rising 55.5 meters above the ground, with a 56 meter-circumference base, the seven-storey octagonal tower was deliberately designed and solidly built during the reign of Emperor Shengzong of the Liao Dynasty. The entrance of the tower is on the first floor the tower. On the inside wall, there are caved inscription in Han, Tibetan, Khitan, Nvzhen, Mongolian and Uygur language.
