Five Pagoda Temple is located on Wutasi Street in the Jiucheng District of Hohhot. It was built in 1727 during the reign of Emperor Qian Long. It is of Indian style and was originally named Vajira Sheli Suburga, a religious term meaning “Stupa for the relics or the ashes of Buddha”. The stupa is built of glazed brick with a height of 16 meters. Vajira Sutra in Han, Mongolian and Tibetan are inscribed on the base and 1119 gilded Buddha are exquisitely carved on the upper part. The middle part of the stupa is decorated with images of lions, elephants, Garuda (Jialouluo) to represent the five worlds of Buddhism. On the back (north) wall of the stupa, there are three marble relief sculptures, including a plansphere marked with Mongolian inscriptions. This is the only star atlas in Mongolian carved on stone, discovered in china. The stupa is surmounted with five pagodas, which give the temple its name.
