The Dazhao Lamasery, also called “Wuliang Temple” in Chinese, is situated in Yuquan District of Hohhot, covering an area of over 30000 square meters.  As a silver Buddha statue which is 2.5 meters high is enshrined and worshiped in the lamasery, Dazhao lamasery is also called “Silver Buddha Lamasery”. The Lamasery was built by Altan Khan- chief of Tumet Mongolian Tribe in the year 1579, and finished in 1580, Wanli Reign in the Ming Dynasty. It was the earliest Lamasery in Hohhot. There is no living Buddha worshiped in the Dazhao Lamasery, because Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty once stayed here for several days and the emperor was regarded the most powerful person in ancient China. In 1585 Dalai Lama III made a special trip to Hohhot to preside over the “Heavenly Light” ceremony for the completion of the statue of Silver Buddha. Since then the Dazhao Lamasery became  very famous and had great influence in surrounding areas.

The Dazhao Lamasery is not only a Buddhist pilgrimage, but it is also a well-known tourist site. The religious building, cultural relics, artworks, Qiamu Dance and Buddhist music make unique Dazhao culture, among with the silver Buddha statue, the dragon relief and the wall paintings are called  “the three unique artworks” in the Lamasery.

In the Buddha Hall statues of Buddha are placed for consecration. In its very center the statue of Sakyamuni Buddha is enshrined, which is built by Nepali craftsmen of 1500 kg silver. The statue of Zongkapa, founder of Lamaism is placed near Sakyamuni on the right. Images of Buddha’s eight famous warriors are placed on both sides of the hall. The main hall is the biggest and best preserved wooden structure surviving from the Ming Dynasty.
