The Hohhot Great Mosque was originally built in 1693 during the reign of Qing Emperor Kangxi and extended and rebuilt later. Its present construction scale was almost done during 1923 to 1925 with the donations by Muslim people. At the back of the mosque there is a bathroom, door facing the south; the Muslim people can only go to the prayer services after bath. At the south-west corner there is a four-storey six-arris building named the Full Moon Building (Wangyue Lou) , which is the most particular building in the mosque, 36 meters high, built in 1939. Covering an area of 4000 square meters, the mosque has 25 halls, which can hold 500 people. On the wall of the main hall, there painted the Mecca Mosque and “the Tianfang Painting”.
The mosque buildings are mainly featured by Chinese traditional style, mixed with Hui People’ brick carving arts and Islam’s decoration skills. The well-preserved mosque buildings, together with the Islamic Culture Street are the main tourist site for visitors and activity areas for the local people in the Huimin District of Hohhot.
